Roku, the number
one streaming device maker in the world is expanding the reach of its
ad-supported ‘Roku Channel’. The company is doing it by bringing the channel to
the web and mobile devices. With this,
users will be able to watch Roku content even if they don’t have Roku devices.
Roku has launched a new section for free TV content on 8th August 2018.
The first time the
world saw Roku channel was in September
2017. Roku channel was an ad-supported VOD service, but it was only confined to
the Roku platform, i.e., people having
Roku devices and Roku TV was able to
access the channel. At launch, Roku channel sported catalog titles from some of
the most acclaimed studios such as Sony Pictures Entertainment, Metro Goldwyn
Mayer (MGM), Warner Bros and Lionsgate. It is from that day the Roku channel
has expanded its service and provided news programming and TV shows as well.
The craze of Roku
Channel is such that it has become the 5th most popular streaming
channel on Roku when it comes to having the number of active accounts. The
company has revealed that the streaming hours for Roku channel is doubled in
last six months, which shows how much channel is in demand.
A number of news
sources had the information that Roku will be bringing Roku channel to mobile
phones and other devices that are not running on Roku OS, but nothing could be
confirmed at that time. But, now that Roku has made it official. Roku has
earlier told that Roku channel will be making its way to Samsung TVs, which is
also going to happen now.
Roku has taken the
next step by launching a web version of the channel as well, which users will
be able to access on their computers as well as mobile devices. Those who
haven’t signed up for Roku account will have to do it as soon as possible
because otherwise, they will not be able to enjoy the services of Roku channel.
Having a Roku account will allow people to synchronize content on multiple
devices. Moreover, they will also be able to watch shows on their smartphones,
pause when they come across an important task, and then, resume on their TV
that supports Roku.
There has been a
new menu item as well, which you can see on
Roku devices. This menu item will make watching free content a lot easier. The
name of the menu is ‘Featured Free’, and you can access it from the Roku home
screen. With this feature, you can watch a decent amount of free content with the
main emphasis being put on the TV shows
from networks like Fox, the CW, and ABC.
Along with that, content from a number of free streaming services can also be
watched such as Roku Channel, Crackle, Tubi and Pluto TV.
Featured Free is
actually a collection of deep links given in the apps of the aforementioned
content providers. Users can begin streaming of any episode without having to
sign-up. There is no cable subscription required, no need to authenticate
anything, no login, etc.
Roku has
identified that networks place the majority of their content in front of the paywall, where it can be accessed by anyone
irrespective of the fact whether they have a cable subscription or not.
